The Contribution Project – A Simple Intervention for Cultivating Purpose and Well-being.

A multi-year research initiative led by Dr. Anthony Burrow at Cornell University suggests a remarkably accessible psychological intervention for enhancing well-being: facilitating small, personal acts of contribution. Dubbed “The Contribution Project,” the study provided young participants with a modest financial grant to enact a personally meaningful contribution. Preliminary, unpublished results indicate that this simple act significantly boosted participants’ sense of purpose, belonging, and positive affect compared to a control group. This report details the study’s methodology, findings, and places them within the broader context of purpose-in-life research, proposing that this method offers a scalable and potent “hack” for improving mental health in modern society.

  1. Introduction: The Well-being Crisis and the Search for Purpose

Contemporary society faces a well-documented crisis in mental health. Historic levels of Americans report feelings of depression, anxiety, and loneliness, with life satisfaction at a multi-decade low (Gallup, 2023). In this climate, the search for effective well-being interventions has intensified, giving rise to a complex self-help industry focused on concepts like mindfulness, grit, and resilience.

However, a growing body of psychological research points to a potentially more straightforward and foundational factor: a sense of purpose. Drawing from philosophical traditions (Aristotle, Nietzsche) and modern psychology (Frankl, 1959), this research posits that purposeโ€”the feeling that one’s life is directed and motivated by goals that are meaningful beyond oneselfโ€”is a critical component of human flourishing.

  1. The Contribution Project: Methodology

The “Contribution Project,” conducted under Cornell’s Purpose and Identity Processes Lab, was designed to test a simple hypothesis: would being invited to define and enact a personal act of contribution enhance a participant’s psychological well-being?

3.1. Participants and Design:

ยท The study involved approximately 1,200 college and high school students since its inception in 2019.
ยท The design was a randomized controlled trial. Eligible applicants were randomly selected to either receive a $400 “contribution” grant or to be part of a non-recipient control group (Burrow, 2023, as cited in Ehrenfreund, 2023).

3.2. Intervention:

ยท Selected recipients were given $400 with the sole instruction to use it to make a contribution “to pursue what matters most” to them. This could benefit their community, family, or even themselves, allowing for a broad and personal interpretation of “contribution.”
ยท Recipients had a six-to-eight-week period to conceive and execute their contribution.

3.3. Data Collection:

ยท All applicants were assessed at baseline using standard psychological measures.
ยท A follow-up assessment was conducted 6-8 weeks later, comparing the grant recipients to the control group who did not receive funds.

  1. Preliminary Findings and Analysis

Although the results are not yet peer-reviewed, Dr. Burrow has presented unambiguous preliminary data (Burrow, 2023, as cited in Ehrenfreund, 2023). At the 8-week mark, the intervention group scored significantly higher than the control group on multiple key metrics:

ยท Latent Well-being: General satisfaction and positive functioning.
ยท Sense of Purpose: The feeling that life is directed and meaningful.
ยท Sense of Belonging: Connection to a community or social group.
ยท Feeling Needed and Useful: The perception that one’s actions have value to others.
ยท Affective Balance: A higher ratio of positive to negative emotions.

Dr. Burrow’s conclusion is that the act of being “invite[d] to think about a contribution they want to make and help them [to] make that contribution” can lead to a measurable increase in purpose and well-being (Burrow, 2023, as cited in Ehrenfreund, 2023).

  1. Context within the Broader Research Landscape

The findings of the Contribution Project are not an isolated phenomenon but align with a robust body of existing research.

ยท Therapeutic Applications: Dr. Todd Kashdan of George Mason University’s Well-Being Lab has found similar results in clinical populations. His work shows that having patients with social anxiety disorder or PTSD monitor their progress toward a self-defined purpose leads to increased self-esteem, meaning, and positive emotions (Kashdan, as cited in Ehrenfreund, 2023). The mechanism is “getting outside of yourself” and focusing on purposeful pursuits rather than internal symptoms.
ยท Health and Longevity: Numerous studies have linked a strong sense of purpose to tangible physical health benefits, including reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, slower cognitive decline, and greater longevity (e.g., Cohen, et al., 2016; Kim, et al., 2019).
ยท Philosophical and Psychological Foundation: The results powerfully echo the writings of psychiatrist Viktor Frankl, who argued that happiness “cannot be pursued; it must ensueโ€ฆ as the unintended side effect of one’s personal dedication to a cause greater than oneself” (Frankl, 1959, p. ).

  1. Implications and Future Directions

The Contribution Project’s significance lies in its simplicity and scalability.

ยท Countering Narcissism Narratives: The study offers a powerful rebuttal to the characterization of Gen Z as inherently narcissistic and self-centered. The fact that 95% of recipients used their grants for other-benefiting contributions suggests a deep-seated, latent desire for purpose and community connection (Burrow, 2023, as cited in Ehrenfreund, 2023).
ยท A Practical Tool for Institutions: This intervention presents a low-cost, high-impact model that could be adopted by educational institutions to foster student well-being and by parents seeking to cultivate purpose in their children (Bronk, as cited in Ehrenfreund, 2023).
ยท A Personal Well-being Strategy: For individuals, it provides an actionable strategy: conduct a regular “purpose check-in,” identify a small contribution you can make, and execute it. The contribution need not be grand; as Burrow notes, it can be “things we can fit into our everyday routines” (Burrow, 2023, as cited in Ehrenfreund, 2023).

  1. Conclusion

While awaiting formal peer review and publication, the preliminary findings from Cornell’s Contribution Project present a compelling case. In an age of complexity and anxiety, the path to greater well-being may be simpler than often presumed. By shifting focus from internal self-improvement to external contribution, individuals can activate a powerful psychological process where happiness and a sense of purpose “ensue” as natural byproducts. This research affirms a timeless truth: that we find ourselves most fully when we are dedicated to something beyond ourselves.
