Chili peppers, a staple in many cuisines worldwide, are not only valued for their flavor but also for their potential health benefits. The active compound in chili peppers, capsaicin, is primarily responsible for their pungency and has been the focus of numerous studies investigating its effects on health. This report reviews the current research on the health benefits of chili peppers, highlighting their impact on metabolic health, cardiovascular health, anti-inflammatory properties, pain relief, cancer prevention, and gut health.

1. Metabolic Health

4. Pain Relief

Capsaicin is widely used in topical pain relief formulations due to its ability to desensitize pain receptors. A Cochrane review by Derry et al. (2021) confirmed the efficacy of topical capsaicin in managing chronic pain, particularly in conditions like neuropathy and arthritis. The review emphasized that capsaicin can provide significant pain relief and improve the quality of life for individuals suffering from chronic pain conditions.

5. Cancer Prevention

Emerging research has explored the potential anti-cancer properties of capsaicin. Studies have indicated that capsaicin may induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) in certain cancer cells and inhibit tumor growth in animal models. Bae et al. (2020) reported that capsaicin could effectively induce apoptosis in human gastric cancer cells, suggesting its potential as a complementary treatment in cancer therapy.

6. Gut Health

Chili peppers may also have a positive impact on gut health. Recent studies suggest that capsaicin can promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria and improve gut barrier function. Zhang et al. (2021) noted that capsaicin might enhance gut microbiota diversity, which is essential for maintaining overall health and preventing gastrointestinal disorders.
